Malta-based commodity trader Alkagesta has agreed to buy Energy Petrol, a Turkish marine-fuel distribution business, in a transaction that will give the group its first vessels. Bloomberg reported the agreement on 22 October 2026, describing a move that strengthens Alkagesta’s position in Mediterranean bunkering and takes it beyond fuel trading into delivery to ship operators.

In its Energy Petrol acquisition announcement, Alkagesta says the transaction has received approval from Turkey’s competition authority. The company puts the acquired fleet at eight marine-fuel vessels and says Energy Petrol will retain independent operations. The parties have not disclosed the financial terms.

The distinction between supplying fuel and delivering it is central to the deal. Trading secures the product; marine-fuel distribution connects that supply with vessels that need to refuel. Bringing a distribution fleet into the group adds an operational link to Alkagesta’s existing bunker-fuel business rather than simply increasing its trading volumes.

According to Alkagesta’s announcement, the transaction brings its total global oil-products storage capacity to approximately 728,000 cubic metres. The company also reports that it currently supplies roughly 40% of Turkey’s marine-fuel market, which it estimates at 2.5 million tonnes a year, and about 75% of Malta’s market. These figures are company-reported measures of its existing supply position, not independently verified forecasts of the acquisition’s impact.

The investment sits alongside Alkagesta’s expansion in Singapore. Its announcement cites monthly bunker volumes of approximately 250,000 metric tonnes in that hub during its first full year, while pointing to plans for further marine-fuel supply growth there. The Turkish agreement adds physical distribution assets to a business operating across several bunkering markets.

Alkagesta’s Managing Director of Investments and Asset Management, Asad Huseynov, says the deal could provide a foundation for future infrastructure-related investments or structured partnerships. No additional transactions were announced. For shipping customers, the immediate development is the agreed addition of Energy Petrol’s distribution business and fleet; the announcement does not disclose changes to fuel prices, delivery contracts or operating schedules.
