Alkagesta, an international trading company established in 2018, has opened a biofuels trading office in Geneva, according to Radio Lac. This move is part of a wider diversification strategy, shifting from petroleum products towards biofuels, fertilisers, and agricultural inputs, reflecting the evolving commodities ecosystem in Geneva.
The company's management views diversification as a method to balance portfolio risks and meet future demand, driven by climate objectives and corporate decarbonisation commitments. While petroleum products remain central to Alkagesta's operations, biofuels and fertilisers offer complementary growth avenues.
Geneva was chosen for its established financial and regulatory infrastructure, which supports commodity trading. The city provides access to banks, insurers, and specialists proficient in commodity finance, risk management, and governance, which are crucial for the traceability and certification requirements of biofuels.
Alkagesta's General Manager, Orkhan Rustamov, stated that the company aims to contribute to the transition towards cleaner fuels. This will involve collaboration within the Swiss ecosystem and with international partners to promote responsible and sustainable growth, as reported by the publication.
The expansion into new sectors like biofuels and fertilisers in Geneva represents a continuous evolution. The same financial and legal professionals who support traditional commodity trading are now applying their expertise to renewable and agricultural commodities, maintaining Switzerland's relevance in a decarbonising world.
Alkagesta's network, which includes offices in Malta, Singapore, and Geneva, demonstrates a strategic approach to growth. The company aims to leverage existing strengths, form partnerships within established frameworks, and contribute to the global energy transition through rigorous and collaborative efforts.
