Alkagesta, a commodity trading and bunker firm based in Malta, has joined the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) as a corporate member. Ship & Bunker reported that this move aligns with Alkagesta's expanding role in the global marine fuels market.
The company stated in an emailed statement that its membership reinforces its commitment to the bunker market. Alkagesta's marine distribution director, Mithat Ciftcioglu, reportedly described IBIA as a platform for shaping the future of marine energy.
Mr Ciftcioglu also indicated that Alkagesta views the membership as an opportunity to contribute its expertise in structured trade and logistics, while also learning from others focused on innovation and compliance.
In 2025, Alkagesta announced plans to supply ultra-low sulphur fuel oil (ULSFO) across the Central and Eastern Mediterranean region. This initiative was in response to the introduction of an emission control area (ECA) in the Mediterranean.
The firm has also established a dedicated biofuel trading desk in Geneva and secured strategic storage capacities at the Horizon terminal in Singapore, as reported by Ship & Bunker.
