Alkagesta has announced the creation of a new biofuels trading desk in Geneva, according to LFM La Radio. This initiative is intended to enhance the company's European footprint and support the global energy transition, aligning with its objective to foster the growth of the sustainable fuels market.
The company plans to utilise Geneva's established ecosystem, which includes trade finance, legal expertise, risk management, insurance, and logistics services. Alkagesta aims to collaborate with partners who have contributed to the foundations of global commodity trading over decades.
The new desk will coordinate with Alkagesta's existing operations, encompassing sourcing, storage, and compliance, adhering to standards consistent with those of the European Union. It will also leverage the company's international banking relationships and established risk management practices.
LFM La Radio reported that Europe is transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable and low-carbon alternatives. The European biofuels market is projected to reach nearly $59 billion by 2030, with an 11% compound annual growth rate, according to Grand View Research.
The European biodiesel segment alone is estimated at $19.5 billion in 2024 and is expected to exceed $32 billion by 2033, as per IMARC Group. Globally, the biofuels sector was valued at approximately $99.5 billion in 2023 and is forecast to surpass $200 billion by 2030, Grand View Research indicated.
Since its inception in 2018, Alkagesta has formed partnerships with 28 international banks, expanded into 42 countries, and facilitated trade flows exceeding 7 million metric tonnes of commodities annually. The company also operates a logistics network with access to over 700,000 cubic metres of storage capacity in Europe and Asia.
